CAD CAM Dental Zirconia Block

1. Excellent Strength & Durability: Ensuring Long-Term Clinical Performance

This advantage is the primary reason why zirconia has become the mainstream material in dental restorations.

Working Principle:

Using 3Y/4Y/5Y stabilized zirconia formulations and nano-grade powder sintering technology, a dense tetragonal zirconia crystal structure is formed. When subjected to external force, tetragonal zirconia undergoes a martensitic transformation, absorbing impact energy and preventing crack propagation.
In addition, its high-density microstructure (approx. 6.05 g/cm³) minimizes internal porosity, further improving load-bearing capacity.

Benefits:

① High Mechanical Strength: Three-point flexural strength reaches 600–1350 MPa-significantly higher than traditional dental ceramics such as glass ceramics (200–400 MPa). It easily withstands normal chewing forces (200–300 MPa), preventing chipping and fracture.
② Long Service Life: Zirconia shows excellent chemical stability in the moist oral environment, with no corrosion or aging. Restorations can last over 10 years, exceeding the 3–5 year lifespan of resin-based materials.
③ Wide Clinical Applicability: High strength makes it suitable for posterior crowns and bridges that endure heavy loads, while also meeting aesthetic requirements for anterior restorations.

2. Precision for CAD/CAM Processing: Ensuring Fabrication Accuracy

Digital dentistry requires that the material accurately transforms into customized restorations.

Working Principle:

Zirconia blocks are manufactured through a pre-sintering (debinding) process, resulting in moderate hardness (HRC35–40). This allows the material to withstand CAD/CAM milling without deformation or excessive brittleness.
Its internal density is highly uniform (density variation ≤0.02 g/cm³), free from impurities and pores, ensuring stable tool contact and predictable milling accuracy.

Benefits:

① High Milling Precision: Compatible with micro-precision five-axis milling systems. Finished restorations maintain dimensional accuracy within ≤0.05 mm, allowing excellent marginal fit with minimal gaps.
② High Processing Efficiency: Lower cutting resistance in the pre-sintered state shortens milling time by up to 40% compared with fully sintered zirconia. When combined with fast sintering furnaces, "same-day milling and delivery" becomes achievable.
③ High Material Utilization: Uniform material structure reduces waste during milling. Utilization rates exceed 85%, lowering material costs for dental labs and clinics.

3. Good Transparency: Balancing Aesthetics and Function

Translucency is a key advantage that makes zirconia suitable for anterior aesthetic restorations.

Working Principle:

By precisely controlling zirconia powder particle size (20–50 nm) and sintering parameters, the material's internal crystal arrangement is optimized to reduce light scattering and reflection.
The addition of trace amounts of stabilizers such as yttria further adjusts the refractive index, maintaining translucency in the optimal 41%–55% range-high enough for natural esthetics but low enough to prevent excessive show-through of underlying tooth color.

Benefits:

① Natural Appearance: Translucency closely matches that of natural enamel (45%–55%), giving restorations a life-like luster and avoiding the "metal gray" effect seen in porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
② Shade Versatility: Base shades (A1, A2, B1, etc.) can be selected according to patient needs. Combined with translucency, this ensures excellent color matching and aesthetic harmony.
③ Ideal for Anterior Restorations: Suitable for veneers and all-ceramic crowns, enabling clinics to offer high-end cosmetic dental services.

4. Antibacterial Properties: Supporting Oral Health

This advantage highlights zirconia's strong performance in oral biocompatibility.

Working Principle:

Zirconia surfaces exhibit mild alkalinity, disrupting the pH balance of bacterial cell membranes and inhibiting the growth of common oral pathogens (such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis).
Additionally, its dense surface (porosity <0.5%) provides fewer attachment points for bacteria. Zirconia is also non-toxic and does not trigger inflammatory reactions in oral tissues.

Benefits:

① Reduced Bacterial Adhesion: Bacterial accumulation on the restoration surface can be reduced by more than 60%, decreasing plaque formation and lowering risks of caries and periodontitis.
② Better Oral Health Outcomes: Minimizes complications such as marginal gingivitis, especially beneficial for patients with poor oral hygiene.
③ Excellent Biocompatibility: Meets ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards with no risk of allergies or cytotoxicity, making it suitable for most patients and expanding clinics' treatment capability.
