1. Raw Materials of Dental Zirconia Block
Dental zirconia blocks are mainly composed of zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂), a high-strength, biocompatible ceramic material. The main raw materials include:
High-purity zirconium dioxide powder (3Y-TZP 4Y/5Y-TZP)
3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal) has high strength and durability.
4Y/5Y-TZP provides better translucency for anterior tooth restorations.
Yttria (Y₂O₃) – acts as a stabilizer to keep zirconia in the tetragonal phase and enhance fracture toughness.
Alumina (Al₂O₃) – improves stability and anti-aging properties.
Other trace oxides – adjust translucency, hue and mechanical properties.

Manufacturing process of dental zirconia blocks
Step 1: Raw material preparation
Zirconium dioxide powder is precisely mixed with yttrium oxide and other stabilizers to achieve an ideal balance between strength and translucency.
The powder mixture is ball-milled or jet-milled to achieve ultra-fine particle size to ensure uniformity.
Step 2: Spray drying and granulation
Fine zirconia powder is processed by spray drying to form free-flowing spherical particles.
This step increases the bulk density of the material for uniform compaction during pressing.
Step 3: Cold isostatic pressing (CIP)
Zirconium oxide particles are placed in a mold and cold isostatically pressed (CIP) at high pressure (up to 200 MPa).
This ensures uniform density distribution, reduces internal defects and improves mechanical strength.
Step 4: Pre-sintering
The pressed zirconia blocks are pre-sintered at around 900-1100°C to obtain sufficient strength for milling while maintaining machinability.
At this stage, the material is in a chalky state and can be easily processed in a CAD/CAM milling machine.
Step 5: Shaping and machining
The pre-sintered blocks are precisely cut into standard sizes (e.g. 98 mm discs) compatible with 5-axis milling machines.
The surfaces are smooth and the edges are refined for easy handling.
Step 6: Final sintering
After milling into the desired dental restoration shape (crown, bridge, etc.), the zirconia restoration undergoes final sintering at 1,450-1,600°C.
During this process, the zirconia shrinks by about 20-25% and reaches a final high-density state with a strength of 900-1,200 MPa (3Y-TZP has a higher strength).
Step 7: Coloring and glazing (optional)
Coloring: Some zirconia blocks are pre-colored, while others require liquid coloring before final sintering.
Glazing and polishing: The finished restoration is glazed and polished to enhance aesthetics and smoothness.
